How Do You Write an Analysis Paper: Notes on Style

An analysis paper seeks to explain your theory about a work of some sort. Your explanation then needs to be supported by experts, valid sources, professors, articles, quotes, and critical reviews. So you are explaining and supporting your particular theory on a subject or work. There are some style issues you need to consider as you write your analysis.

APA or MLA

APA or MLA is always the first thing you need to discover about your paper. Each style is very different and you want to follow the correct guidelines, so your grade does not suffer at all. Keep a style handbook near you when you write your analysis. Make sure to ask your teacher which style you should use.

References

Find out how many primary and secondary sources your teacher wants you to use in the paper. Ask if you have to use a certain amount of quotes and if there is a minimum for in-text citations in each paragraph. Know what your teacher expects from you when you write your analysis.

Voice

When you write your analysis, always use the third person point of view. Do not use second person or first person in your formal paper.

Slang and Informal Language

Do not use any slang or informal words or phrases in your analysis. This paper is formal and your language should be formal.

Consider the Other Side

Always consider the other side of your point. Knowing what the opposition to your theory or analyzing is saying helps you to fight the battle of words against them. You do not have to directly mention other theories in your paper; you merely have to refute them with your supported ideas.

Library

Use the librarian at your school to help you find the critical analysis reference section. You can also look at this section online. Reading what other people have said about your topic will help you when you write your analysis. You can use and cite what they say within your paper to support your ideas. You can get help in your direction and an additional source at the same time.

Consider these rules and these ideas for your style as you write your critical analysis. Doing so will make the job of writing easier on you. Make sure you have covered all of your bases before you turn in your perfectly written critical analysis.
